In chapter 1 of my new book, The End of Business as Usual, I share a personal story about how my love for using and collecting fountain pens eroded following the launch of the iPhone. In fact, I can't actually remember picking one up once I started using the iPad during meetings. In the first part of the book, I also explore how technology is changing our DNA.
In the pen example, I've watched my own behavior change. With younger generations, this behavior is what they are learning. It is what they know. I tell the stories of young children and even babies that walk up to TVs to pinch or swipe what's showing on screen. It's simply astounding to see the transformation and expectation coexist. Our job is to find and understand the differences to lead new and engaging experiences. Otherwise, we risk falling to digital Darwinism.
Speakng of which, here is a video that's currently making the rounds that visualizes this discussion. Here, a one-year-old attempts to figure out why a magazine does not work like an iPad. What do you think?
The End of Business as Usual will launch officially on Tuesday October 18, 2011. But, there are several online and retail outlets already reporting early availability.
